The last few weeks talking with different users of https://itcons.app we have realized that there is some confusion between these three concepts: Capture, process and exploit data.
Before going deeper into the article, we would like to point out that in https://itcons.app we are specialists in data capture through reports or forms for business management.
That said, we define the three concepts as follows:
Data capture: consists of the action of generating a digital record. The record can be made by an IoT machine or system or by a person using a form.
Processing the data: sometimes a series of captured data are not in the format or with the context of labels or attributes necessary for a data exploitation system to make use of the data. For example, it is very common that the date format does not match between different data sources or between different data capture or management systems.
Data mining: when a company records data, it does so primarily for three reasons:
- Legal obligation. The best example here are working time records, records of PPE delivery, records of inspection points, etc.
- Record of evidence. For example, works reports or delivery notes signed by the client, action sheets, minutes of visits, etc.
- Management information. For cost, production and/or invoicing reasons.
The three reasons are not mutually exclusive, i.e., it may happen that we record a piece of data for a legal obligation but at the same time it may serve as evidence or it may also help us in management.
When the data is recorded for the purpose of providing management information is when data mining makes much more sense. For example to obtain information about the productivity of my business or information about where we are having the cost.
The exploitation of data can be done from a simple excel, to data visualization programs such as:
https://powerbi.microsoft.com/
In addition to these specific programs for generating processed and processed information, company management programs, be it an accounting program, an invoicing program or an ERP, incorporate the possibility of generating reports or visualizations.
Returning to the beginning of the article, this week we have encountered several cases where the user of https://itcons.app confused and mixed mainly the fact of obtaining a data and the subsequent processing and exploitation of the same.
One response to "Capture, process and exploit data".
